Hola everyone. Since the beginning of this month Delhi has been all over the news for its hazardous smog cover intensified after Diwali, the festival of Hindus. Its during Diwali people burn lot of crackers as a tradition and its when the problem gets more hazardous. Delhi government said that the smog was also due to the crop burning in the neighbouring states. Whatever was the reason this was the first time when many Delhiites like me felt breathless due to air pollution. So this was the best time to go for a vacation to the Himalayas to get a fresh lease of air till conditions got better in Delhi. I instantly packed my bags and headed to Jim Corbett National Park which is hardly 4-5 hours drive from Delhi.
This national park at the foothills of Himalayas has always been my favourite for a short vacation because of its proximity to Delhi and its clean, non-polluted environment. Besides holidaying in the wild gives thrills that can't be compared with anything. Here you can go for a wild safari looking for the tigers and other wild animals in the national park. Or if that doesn't excite you too much then you can just lazy around in a resort here, relax and have some peaceful time in the unpolluted surroundings of the resort. This was not the first time I had gone to Jim Corbett National Park. However this time I wanted to skip the jungle safari and instead wanted to just relax, breathe in some fresh air and do some other activities here. So I checked into a riverfront suite in the Corbett riverside resort which was located alongside the River Kosi and offered some stunning views.
My 3 days stay at this resort was very peaceful and enjoyed whatever activities that the resort offered. There's a horse stable here and you can enjoy a horse ride at a nominal cost. You can also rent a cycle within resort and go about exploring the resort on the two wheels. Indulging yourself in Spa is another way you can relax your body. This resort is a fairly large property and offered some great view of the River Kosi.
My alone time besides the River Kosi stream
That was something that I really enjoyed. Sitting silently and observing the gushing of river stream passing by the side of our resort, was so relaxing that it almost took off all the stress from my body and soul. The water of the river is crystal clear and looks so beautiful. Playing with the water took me back into my childhood where we used to find so much joy in small things. This river was the ultimate stress buster for me and I spent most of my time at this river admiring the beautiful landscape it offered. It seriously unwinds you.
My encounter with fishing
I have always been a big fan of fish and have always loved savouring fish pakoras. However fishing as an art had always both fascinated and intrigued me. It was always my dream to catch a fish myself. I got lucky here because I got a chance to learn some fishing from the local guys. And I managed to catch a fish called as Mahaseer though it was not a very large one, it definitely enhanced my interest in fishing. One thing that I learned about fishing is that it requires a lot of patience....So guys be prepared to toil hard if you want your catch..!
Binge on the food and my all time favourite fish
I thoroughly enjoyed the food here, starting from the simple Dal Rice to my favourite tandoori chicken made in the restaurant of the resort. But one dish that titillated my taste buds was the fried fish made by the restaurant chef. Our resort was just by the side of River Kosi and eating fresh water fish was what kept ringing in my head. I talked to the chief chef of the restaurant about it and he instantly said that they would catch some fresh fishes from the river and make some fried fish for me in the lunch. And he did make some awesome fried fish. I loved it so much that i just could not stop licking my fingers. You should never miss a chance to eat a nicely cooked fresh fish after all because in Delhi we don't get to eat that much fresh fish which has been caught just a couple of hours earlier, from a nearby river.
I also went for my favourite french fries here which i usually try to avoid in Delhi but then on vacations you should give some treat to your taste buds too. But then I always made it a point to eat my fruits too at proper intervals to give my body adequate nutritionary fibre to flush out all the junk that I had eaten.
Cycling my way to fitness
Well even if you are on a vacation you should never leave your daily fitness regime, thats what I try to follow and advise my readers to do the same. I tried to do this by cycling in the resort at dawn and dusk. It also relieves you of all the stress and actually makes you feel like you are indulging in a leisure activity instead of some boring exercise. Even for half an hour but try to maintain your daily exercise routine on vacations too because that would help in burning all the extra calories that you take on your vacations. And then you can just gorge yourself with a chocolate pie or fried fish without feeling guilty.
Oh badminton on grass
Well playing badminton on grass can actually be really fun. Though you cannot always become a Saina Nehwal or a P.V. Sindhu, but then its always good to have some leisure play even if you don't play it that often. And it becomes even more playful when when your badminton court overlooks the river and a pleasant soft breeze just caresses your hair and doesn't interfere with your game.
Visiting the Famous Garjiyadevi Temple
I had heard alot about this temple and some local guys working in the resort also told me that if you have a wish then by praying here your wishes are fulfilled. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Garjiyadevi and is highly revered by the Hindus there. It is a very small temple located on a small hillock on the bank of the River Kosi. In case you want to visit this temple then try visiting this place in early morning, otherwise it becomes really crowded and also climbing those steep stairs to the deity room can be a real task. I could not stop admiring the scenic view of the river Kosi from this temple. It's definitely worth a visit even for the not so religious souls like me.
Tips to keep in mind while visting the River Kosi site and Garjiyadevi temple
Other Tourist attractions in Jim Corbett National Park
Best time to visit this place
November to June is the best period to visit this place because all parts of the Jim Corbett park are open to tourists at this time. After June due to monsoons many roads are washed away so only a small portion of park is open during that time. If you want to avoid the hot weather then November to March is the best time to come here.
About Jim Corbett National Park
It is the first national park of the mainland Asia and is located in the Ramnagar town of the Nainital district in the Uttarakhnad state of India. Its located between the Shivalik Himalayas and the Terai region. This national park is famous for its wildlife especially the Royal Bengal Tiger and Asiatic Elephant. Hungle safari is a good way of seeing the wildlife here. River Kosi is a perennial river draining the Eastern boundary of the park but it doesn't enter the Jim Corbett National park. Its course is very erratic. The river Kosi site that i visited is in Dhikuli which is a small place located in Ramnagar in Nainital District .
